A personalised book about Easter

Feathers on the branches, chicks that cheep and Easter eggs hidden all over the garden. Your child is the hero, drawn from your photo.

Why the theme Easter makes a good book

An adventure that suits the child

Easter comes just as the light is finally returning. There are eggs to paint, chocolate eggs to unwrap, Easter bonnets to make and hunts through the garden for whatever the Easter Bunny has left behind. For a child, Easter is a festival you get to take part in: dressing up, making, searching and painting. A book about Easter makes the most of that playfulness and lets your child race ahead through the garden and find what nobody else has spotted.

Eggs, feathers and a hop through the garden

An Easter book can follow your child through Easter week: eggs boiled and painted at the kitchen table, branches decorated with feathers, a bonnet parade with the neighbours, the egg hunt in the garden or the park. Daffodils on the windowsill, woolly chicks, hot cross buns and a big family lunch can fill the pictures.

Old traditions have more to offer – the Easter Hare, which in old German tales was the one who brought the eggs, a race to roll painted eggs down a hill, a chick that has wandered off and needs help finding its way home, or a hare who has hidden the eggs so well that it has forgotten where.

How you celebrate Easter

Families celebrate Easter in different ways. For some it is a Christian festival celebrating Jesus rising from the dead. For others it is mostly a long weekend with eggs, chocolate and relatives round the table. Tell us what is true for you: who usually comes, what is on the table, whether there is a special place where the eggs get hidden. If your family celebrates Orthodox Easter, which often falls on a different weekend, that works just as well.

Bring in something from last Easter, too, an egg your child painted or a neighbour who always hands out extra chocolate. If the book is to be a present, there are more ideas under Easter in the gifts section.

Egg rolling on Easter Monday

Little children love the colourful feathers, the chick's cheep and finding an egg on every page. For pre-schoolers, the bonnet and the egg hunt are the big events, and the book can let your child rehearse them. School-age children like a story with old customs and a bit of pace, and a ten-year-old may be curious about why eggs and rabbits belong to Easter at all.

In parts of northern England, families roll hard-boiled eggs down a grassy hill on Easter Monday to see whose goes furthest, and in Preston it has been done for generations. Paint some eggs after reading, and let your child make an Easter card of their own to drop through the neighbour's door.

Your child is the hero

You fill in the child's name, age and what they like, and upload a photo. The story about Easter is written for your very own child, and the thirteen pictures and the cover are drawn from the photo in the style you choose. Brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents or the pet can come along, up to five characters. If you would like to include something that has happened lately, a trip or a lost tooth, just write it and it is woven in.
